National Renewable Energy Lab – Tank Testing Capabilities

Available to TEAMER Applicants Summer 2022

NREL’s Marine Renewable Energy small wave can be use for hydrodynamic testing of small-scale wave energy prototypes or other offshore systems where wave interactions are of interest (e.g. floating platforms). Combined with NREL’s data acquisition and instrumentations capabilities, test articles can be rapidly tested and assessed. The tank specifications are:

  • Length: 14m, Depth: 1.3m, Width: 2.5m
  • Wave actuator capable of producing 0.2m waves at frequencies >0.5s

Capabilities include:

  • Capable of producing 0.2m waves at a variety of frequencies (>0.5s)
  • NREL designed and developed instrumentation for data collection
  • Physical model testing
  • Floating structures
  • WEC hydrodynamic modeling (see Numerical Modeling, Design, and Data Analysis)
