St. Anthony Falls Laboratory Main Channel at University of Minnesota
Facility Overview
The University of Minnesota SAFL’s Main Channel is 2.75 m wide by 1.8 m deep by 83.8 m long with a flow capacity of 8.5 m^3/s. The water source is the Mississippi River. The facility is equipped with a wave generator, sediment flux monitoring and recirculation system, and a 3-axis data acquisition carriage. Maximum sediment transport rate capability of 1 kg/s/m. The data acquisition carriage has measurements for water height, bed elevation (single point and 2D line scan), and acoustic Doppler velocimetry for 3D velocity measurements. The data carriage can be programmed with custom scripts describing measurement locations and duration.
The wave generator is capable of producing linear waves with wave heights of <1 cm to 30+ cm, wave lengths ranging from 60 cm to 13+ m, and wave periods ranging from 0.6 to 7 s.
