Facility Overview
The Department of Ocean Engineering at the University of Rhode Island (URI) operates the Wave and Tow Tank, the Wave-Current Flume and the Acoustic Test Tank, hosted at the Narragansett Bay Campus.






Facility Capabilities
Wave - Current Flume. This wave-current flume has a working section length of 8 m (4 bays), a depth of 1.2 m, and a width of 0.5 m. The flume can generate irregular waves (in 2 directions) and currents (2 directions) up to a relatively large flow speed of 1 m/s. In addition, the flume is equipped with software that controls the wave generator to create irregular/regular waves. Wave gauges are connected to the software to calibrate the wave maker and the absorption system. Waves and currents can be generated in both directions (e.g., following or opposing waves). The channel section of the flume is glazed with clear panels of toughened glass that provide visibility, enabling the use of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The PIV system consists of a high-speed digital camera (capable of 800 fps at 4 Mp resolution) and a 5W continuous wave laser for collecting moving particle images which may be used to calculate fluid vector fields. Finally, the flume has sediment traps and sediment transport studies (suspended and bedload); e.g., scouring around foundations of devices can be physically modeled in the flume. The flume can be used to study wave or tidal energy devices. Wave loads on tidal energy devices or impact of currents on wave energy devices can be studied in the flume as it has both wave and current generation capabilities. Wave Tank. The wave tank is 30 m long, 3.6 m wide and 1.8 m deep with a hinged, flapper style hydraulic wave maker at the end. The LabVIEW and MATLAB based control system are capable of producing both regular and irregular waves in a wide array of wave heights and periods; the achievable range for the wave height and the wave period are 0-0.30 m and 0.5 to 2 s, respectively. The Wave Tank has 20 m of adjustable beach for different shoaling profiles and a 2 m/s towing carriage. Wave gauges, pressure sensors, and force transducers are available to use the Wave Tank. The Wave Tank is used for a broad range of testing, including work on wave energy extraction, turbines (using towing carriage), acoustic measurement of surface waves, and wave-induced forcing on marine structures. Acoustic Tank The acoustic tank is 7.5 m long, 4 m wide, 3.3. m deep used for experimentation with hydrophones, underwater camera calibrations, and autonomous and remote operated marine robotics testing. The tank has an electronics and computer station for signal processing and data acquisition and also a gantry system above it with two rotating positioning towers. The tank can be used in testing acoustic transducers involved in marine renewable energy projects in order to study underwater noise generated by wave or tidal energy devices during construction and/or operation. Additionally, OCE has a number of systems that have been used to study the impact of construction noise on the marine environment: 1 . Six Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBX), which measure acoustic particle velocity in three mutually perpendicular directions in addition to acoustic pressure, are available. OBX sensor packages are self-contained units and they can be mechanically connected to a bottom mooring and acoustic releases for efficient deployment/recovery. URI currently has four OBX units; 2. The URI Geosled consists of a tetrahedral array of hydrophones with a spacing of 0.5 m. The system includes a data acquisition system. In addition to the hydrophone array, geophone arrays can be deployed attached to the geosled. These devices can be calibrated in the acoustic tank.
